Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, professor Ishak Oloyede criticized the college of education in the country for making mathematics a compulsory requirement for students of the faculty of humanities.
The minister said this at a three-day summit on the move of the College of Education System in Nigeria held in Abuja on Tuesday, February 23rd. He also warned the Provosts of Colleges of Education against the conduct of illegal admission. Before entering college, students consider the fact that they need to master basic mathematics at the primary and secondary levels.
However, he said this does not mean that JAMB does not require mathematics as a requirement for participants in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) unless the law changes.
He further expressed concern about the low turnout of students that apply to Colleges of Education stating it is a problem that needs to be addressed immediately. Ishaq suggested that the university abolish the strict admission requirement to make room for more applicants.
