Director of the National Youth Service Corps NYSC for Southwest Service, Mrs. Oluwafunmayo Akin-Moses, described the program as a tool for workforce development and job creation for youth.
According to him, the NYSC is also an agent for peace and progress in Nigeria, and thus calls for the elimination of ordinary youth waiting to benefit will ultimately do more harm than good.
He announced this at a ceremony to mark the corps 48th anniversary at the permanent orientation camp in Ede, Osun on Saturday.
He said that as part of efforts to defend the program, NYSC Director General Brigadier General Shuaybu Ibrahim is doing everything under the law to ensure the NYSC is not abolished, even if some Nigerians call for the program to be phased out as a failure. The purpose for which it was founded.
He reminded Corps members that the 48-year program called for unity and progress, adding that the commemoration would take place on May 22, but had to be postponed due to mourning being appointed Chief of Staff by the federal government, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Atahiru and other Headquarters who lost their lives in a plane crash in Kaduna on Friday 21 May 2021.
The director urged the corps members to humbly serve in selfless service and do their best in all situations.
