Although police officers are usually unarmed at the time, weapons are provided to them when needed for certain missions or circumstances.

Missions were frequent across the country, but Babangida announced in 1989 that more officers would be reassigned to their home areas to facilitate police-community relations.

There was no reports on how effective this idea is in facilitating police work in the country. The NPF was reorganized into seven statewide commands in late 1986, replacing the command structure associated with individual Nigerian states.

Each of these commands is headed by a police commissioner and is further subdivided into provincial and police units under local officers.

The NPF headquarters is the district command itself, but is also responsible for monitoring and coordinating other district commands.
